CHAPTER ONE (c) 1994- Joel D. Johnson
Up until the industrial age, Americans made their living primarily as farmers, hunters, and small business people. Ninety-three percent were farmers. Nearly everyone was self-employed. Yet less than 10% of the American population is actually involved in self-employment today. Industrialization decreased self employment and increased farm productions. It moved farmers to the factory, to the cities, increasing income, technology and education, while unknowingly polluting our atmosphere. Today ownership of natural resources, the commodities that once determined the wealthiest nations of the world, is no longer the deciding factor. Information and technology has the controlling edge in the creation of world wealth. Paul Zane Pilzer, author of the book, Unlimited Wealth, Crown Publishers, Inc., New York, NY, says, "In our alchemic world, wealth equals physical resources times technology. For it is technology that defines what is a resource as well as what our effective supply of that resource is. Technology today is what makes one individual’s earning power one thousand times that of another. It is the advance of technology, rather than the accumulation of physical resources, that offers the only real way to store wealth." Information and technology will play a vital roll in the success of your business. It is imperative that you understand the importance of information gathering, technologies for gathering and sharing facts, and how they will effect your future. Being computer illiterate will almost guarantee your failure in the future. In fact, by the year 2002, it will be almost impossible to be connected to major vendors without information sharing. Electronic banking is now a reality and will be the norm. Most likely, as the futurist predict, it will be a requirement in paying and receiving, not an elective. Financial transactions will be instantaneous by encrypted computer data transfer. Writing checks will be a rare occurrence. Automatic deposit of income, automatic payment of utilities, subscriptions, car payments, etc are now being handled by banks and a growing number of consumers are opting for this service. It is the wave of the future. In America 70% of new business startups fail. Of those that fail, 80% will shut their doors withint he first two years. Ninety-five percent will fail within the first five years. Why? I believe people fail to plan and are not prepared for the challenges that face all people in business. For some reason they think bad things will not happen to them. As you can tell by the statistics, things do happen, but basically, I believe most things happen because of bad choices. Business research has shown that most people fail due to: lack of knowledge: lack of capitol: failure to plan and failure to seek professional help. "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail," as the old saying goes. The key is getting the information and plan, plan, plan, and then carry out your plans. Goals are written in concrete, plans are written in sand. If it does not work, change the plan...not the goal. Why do some people succeed while others fail in business? Excellent question! Of course there are various opinions on this subject, but I believe people who succeed at anything, generally come to the table with all their homework done. They know their business; set realistic goals; make good plans; start with sufficient financing and they work their plans. However, most of all, they do what failures refuse to do... they work smart. Someone once said, "People can be divided into three distinct groups; those that make things happen; those that watch things happen; and those that wonder...what happened? Making the right choices and making the right plans is the first and most important ingredient in your success. However, you will need lots of courage, knowledge, perseverance, and money. Most of all you will need to do a lot of hard, smart work, to make things happen in the right way. You can make your own luck, but a few prayers probably wouldn’t hurt either. If you are still in the mood to do your thing...read on.
